Bluestone Properties and Uses

When cut in any direction Bluestone will display a pattern that bears a remarkable resemblance to the cosmos. For this reason it is considered by many to be sacred or magic, with unique metaphysical properties connecting to the expanding universe and the illusive spiritual realms.

The most well known use for Bluestone is the construction of the inner circle at Stonehenge. Most of the stones there have been positively identified as being Spotted Dolerite from the Preseli Hills in Wales. In the case of a few of these stones, the presence of spots can not be confirmed due to the extreme weathering of the surfaces.

Other stones at Stonehenge also come from Wales and some archaeologists now believe that discovering the sources of these stones can help to plot the journey of the Bluestones from the Preseli Hills to the Wiltshire downs.

Many archaeologists now accept that the existence of the strange pattern in the stone was probably the reason why the ancient people of Britain chose to use it for Stonehenge, and other work is being carried out to discover if Stonehenge Bluestones were seen as having special healing properties by their early visitors.

In the Stonehenge Doucmentary (available as a free download on the downloads page) it is suggested that the ancient people of Preseli may have had a sixth sense that enabled them to plot their positions over great distances as they travelled across the globe, rather like like migrating birds. Evidence gathered during our first 'Bluestone Experiment' seems to back this up and suggests that some people still posess this ability today.

Suitable Stones

For all spiritual, healing and well-being work, avoid stones that have been produced by crushing or smashing of larger stones. Breaking Bluestone with a sledge hammer or by commercial crushing processes damages the structure of the stone. It is also preferable to avoid stones that have been tumbled as this process may also reduce the special qualities of the Bluestone.

The most suitable stones for dream work and receiving messages will be small flat stones with a large surface to weight ratio and organically rounded edges. It has been recently suggested that small round cabochon shapes with unpolished bases would make ideal 'third eye' stones and Celtworld will be producing a new batch of 'third eye' cabochons, specially prepared to try this idea out.

For dowsing purposes, quite large stones are considered the best, when in capable hands. Stones with flat surfaces, such as the classic wand type shapes, seem to be less effective. Celtworld have received several reports that the perfect half sphere drop is a very powerful shape for dowsing. Avoid sleeping with such stones under your pillow!

For keeping by your computer, miniature standing stones of various weights seem to be quite effective and flat sides with polished main faces have received the best feedback.

Some people consider that stones for dream work should have at least some part unpolished.
