Preseli Bluestone Source, Legal and other Information

Carn Meini from Gors Fawr

Carn Meini: The source of the Bluestone. Bluestone is referred to in The Tome of Seus as 'The stone of Einim from the Mount of Cosmic Consciousness'.

Carn Menyn: Until recently, when asked why Carn Meini is sometimes referred to as Carn Menyn, I explained that Carn Menyn is the old name. Now, courtesy of Wyn Owen, local historian, poet and good friend, I have a more specific explanation to offer. Anyone interested in the authority behind this explanation should read Mynachlogddu Pembrokeshire: A guide to its Antiquities by E T Lewis – E L Jones & Son, 1967.

Carn Meini is a relatively new name, created by mapmakers to provide the wider world with a more logical label for the word ‘Menyn’, which inexplicably translates to ‘Butter’. The new name, which means Stone Outcrop or Cairn, became generally accepted globally and for many years only the older local inhabitants of Mynachlogddu tended to refer to the area by its old name. However, it is very interesting to see that the more romantic amongst the Bluestone Community have a distinct preference for the old name and Carn Menyn is now the more popular name for use on the Internet.

Wyn explains that this is a good example of language in evolution and points out that there is always a reason behind such changes. It would be interesting to know what the name for this ancient spiritual place might have been before Menyn, but I guess that is something we will never know.

Legal Situation: The tiny, ancient site of Carn Meini is now protected by British Law and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. No one is allowed to take spotted dolerite from the mountain anymore. The stone that www.celtworld.co.uk sell is from a private source and consists of stones that were brought from the mountain long before any laws of extraction were put into force. Only spotted dolerite from such private sources can be sold legally as extraction of any kind from the mountain itself is illegal. Please respect our ancient heritage.

Message from Pembrokeshire County Council, Minerals and Waste Enforcement Department: Mynydd Preceli falls within the list of European protected sites and is also designated an SAC and SSSI. It is illegal to hammer the Tors or Block fields within this protected area (with provision for a very substantial fine). Many of the Tors and Blockfields within the area are also Scheduled Ancient Monuments, which gives them additional legal protection.
